In 1974 Minnesota passed the No-Fault Automobile Insurance Act, which is why you hear people refer to Minnesota as a “no fault” state. This law requires Minnesota residents at all times to maintain basic automobile liability coverage insurance on vehicles owned and operated in Minnesota.
Built into each and every Minnesota automobile insurance plan is something called “Personal Injury Protection” or (PIP). Personal injury protection was designed to cover medical bills that result from a car accident. What this means is that if you are involved in a car accident, resulting in injury to you or your family members, your car insurance company will cover the medical costs accrued during the recovery.
Personal injury protection will cover up to $20,000.00 of medical bills that result from a car accident injury. Anything from an ambulance ride to chiropractic care is covered at 100% by the car insurance company. By using PIP you will not receive any penalties from the insurance company or have increased premiums.
In order to utilize your personal injury protection you must file a claim with your car insurance company. Once the insurance company has submitted a claim number you are ready to start your road to recovery. All you have to do is fill out a little paper work and you can start receiving treatment.
