SPOTLIGHT ON: ZEYNEP TUZCU
Tell us a little about your yoga journey. When did you first start practicing? When did you start teaching?
I had just gotten home from a 6 month long trip to Costa Rica in 2013. I had taken a few classes in high school, but it wasn’t until college my yoga journey began. I found myself completely hooked on not only the physical benefits but the mental benefits of yoga off the mat. I began teaching at a friend’s essential oil spa at the end of 2014 and loved teaching so much that I decided to invest in yoga teacher training through LifePower in 2015.
What styles have you practiced/taught?
My yoga teacher training is rooted in Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga and this is the type I practice most, whether that is in a traditional Ashtanga series or a vinyasa class. I also teach yin yoga. I’ve also loved exploring Acro-yoga because I find it so empowering to teach both women and men that we all have the strength to lift others up physically and emotionally.
What inspired you to become a teacher?
I was recovering from very challenging circumstances when I began practicing yoga and I found that my practice and my teachers absolutely changed my life. My grades improved, I became much more resilient and less reactive, my relationships were strengthened and I learned how to love and appreciate every part of my life. My yoga teachers really shaped a huge part of me and I knew that I wanted to bring these same incredible benefits to others.
What elements do you bring to your classes that make them unique?
Regardless of whether this is your first time stepping onto yoga mat or you have a yoga guru in Mysore, I truly believe that the classes I teach are accessible to all levels. I bring an element of fierce self-love to each of my classes; as a teacher it is my job to foster an environment of inclusion and non-judgment to give each student the opportunity to listen to their body for one hour.
What is one piece of advice you would have for someone who is just starting their yoga journey?
Just begin. Be open to quivers and shakes, to frustration, to deep emotions you didn’t know you had coming to the surface, and ultimately to finding happiness. Don’t be discouraged if you didn’t have a positive experience. Begin again. Try a different teacher, a different class, a home practice. Ask your teacher questions. Lean into the ups and downs and know that it’s not about what clothes you wear or how long you’ve been practicing, it’s about turning inward and finding peace.
Anything else we should know?
I am also a Mayo Clinic trained health and wellness coach and I’m currently taking on new clients for free coaching consultations and session packages while I obtain my certification hours. A health and wellness coach serves as a motivating and inspiring accountability partner whether you want to stay well or you have any kind of health and wellness goals you want to reach. As a client, you are completely in the driver’s seat and the coach is simply there to encourage you on your path to becoming your best self!
