FOR MUSCLE SPRAINS / STRAINS
Sprains are damage and tearing of connective fibrous tissue connecting one bone to another. Every joint in the human body has a physiological range of motion. When joints in the body are pushed past these ranges of motion the force in transferred into the ligaments. Sprains are graded on a scale of 1 to 3 with a grade 1 representing a slight tear and a grade 3 representing a complete tear of the ligament. Grade 1 and 2 tears may be managed with conservative care. Grade 3 tears may require surgical repair depending on the extent of the injury and which ligament has been torn.
Strains are damage or tearing of the tendon tissue connecting bone to muscle or the muscle tissue. This is more commonly call a muscle “pull” or “tear”. Tendon and muscle tissue has physiological range it can stretch. When this tissue is pushed past this limit or over exerted with repetitive stress a tear may occur. Commonly strains come from running, sprinting, jumping, slips and lifting.
Most of these injuries are minor and can be managed and treated with conservative care. Rest, ice, compression and elevation are the key component to a reducing swelling and to a speedy recovery. In severe cases of completely rupture ligaments or tendons surgery may be required.
Keeping the body moving and function properly are key. Stretching and chiropractic adjustments can help with these aspects. Proper evaluation of the joint should be done before returning to activities. The team at Northern Edge Chiropractic in Plymouth, MN can help.
