Symptoms of Sciatica
Sciatica is defined as a symptom, generally radiating pain, caused by compression of a portion or all of the sciatic nerve root. Sciatica is very common with about 40% of the population feeling this painful symptom at some point in their lives. The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the human body and is comprised from multiple nerve root segments, mostly the 4th lumbar and 3rd sacral nerves (L4 and S3).
The sciatic nerve starts in the low back and runs posteriorly down the back of the leg into the foot, making it the longest nerve in the human body. The sciatic nerve supplies all of the skin on the leg, and the muscles in the posterior thigh, leg and foot. Needless to say this nerve can cause a great deal of pain if irritated.
The reason why so many people have heard about sciatica is because the nerve is so easily irritated. There are a variety of causes for sciatic nerve pain. The problem could be at L4 or S3, a structural misalignment of those vertebrae can cause direct irritation to the nerve ultimately producing radiating pain down the leg.
Probably the most common cause of sciatic nerve pain is called piriformis syndrome. As you can see from the picture above the sciatic nerve runs directly beneath the piriformis muscle and directly over the obturator internus muscle. When these muscles are over used they become tight, pinching on the sciatic nerve. Both of these muscles are located in our gluteal region, and are used on a daily basis to aid in the stabilization phase of walking. In some cases people actually have congenital abnormalities in which the sciatic nerve pierces the muscle belly of the piriformis.
As you can imagine with a muscle that is being used constantly this could create some sever leg pain. Other causes could be due to disc herniations, lumbar spinal stenosis, or isthmic spondylolisthesis.

Sciatica is very painful, and typically takes more than one remedy to fix. Some people may experience dull ache or lower back pain, posterior buttocks, legs, and even into the feet. It is also common to have sharp radiating pain shooting from the low back down the back of the legs. Burning, numbness, tingling, and even weakness in the legs are common secondary symptoms to the pain. Generally the pain only affects one side of the lower body, and can be debilitating. People report trouble standing, walking, or even putting any sort of pressure on the affected area.
To get some quick sciatica pain relief try starting with ice, this will help dull the pain, and get rid of any inflammation that could be irritating the nerve. Areas to ice would be the low back and the buttocks region.
Foam rolling the gluteus muscles and the piriformis muscle will generally help, because sciatica is usually caused by a muscular impingement. If you do not own a foam roller you can sit on a tennis ball or lacrosse ball, and roll over the area of pain. Again all this is doing is lengthening and relaxing the muscle. By taking irritation off the L4 and S3 nerve roots you will find pain relief in the lower leg.
Lastly, regular chiropractic adjustments have been proven to help get rid of sciatica nerve pain and help with long term sciatica pain relief.
